S4 Energy, the Rotterdam-based leader in European grid-scale storage, spotted an opportunity to capitalize on the flexibility offered by the open market structure in the Netherlands for the first 4-hour BESS in the country. enspired's one-stop shop for battery optimization proved to be the perfect solution for S4 Energy's 10 MW battery in the Rilland municipality of Zeeland. The project marked enspired's entry into the Dutch market and the first use case of the cross-market optimization partnership with local player Flexcity, a subsidiary of decarbonization giant Veolia.
S4 Energy develops, builds, owns, and operates grid-scale battery energy storage systems. With the mission to make the energy grid more resilient and flexible, S4 Energy helps energy producers, grid operators, and end users to stabilize supply and demand and make the most out of the existing infrastructure.
The Dutch electricity grid has long been under strain, with the demand for electricity growing faster than the infrastructure can be expanded. Alternative solutions are essential to keep the grid stable and energy affordable. S4 Energy's storage installations create energy buffers in high-and medium-voltage networks, efficiently harvesting surplus energy during over capacity periods and releasing it when demand surges.
The Netherlands' connection to reserve capacity exchange platform PICASSO in October 2024 called for a diversified optimization strategy. enspired has taken the lead in optimizing S4 Energy's battery across wholesale markets, with Flexcity contributing key expertise in market knowledge, ancillary services, and congestion management. Full transparency is delivered via 24/7 access to a live dashboard.
Dominique Becker Hoff, Chief Commercial Officer of S4 Energy, explains:
"We were actively looking for a partner that could go with us into the market on a fully merchant basis. enspired was very transparent about the way they would bring us to the market and how they would share profits and upsides with us. And that gave us a lot of comfort."
The Netherlands has a huge mix of renewable energy coming in from both land and sea. The ability of S4 Energy's battery to efficiently store energy for an extended period combined with rapid, on-demand response enables the provision of essential grid services, ultimately benefitting end consumers. The project represents a critical and scalable step forward in sustainable energy storage innovation and grid flexibility.
“We are excited to drive innovation together with S4 Energyto make a lasting impact on energy efficiency and sustainability,” explains enspired's Chief Growth Officer Jürgen Pfalzer.
"Expanding to new markets is an important part of our growth trajectory. It's all about bringing the same in-house trading platform that has been successful in other countries and adapting it to the different revenue streams available in the Netherlands."
