About S4 Eemshaven

Strategically positioned at the centre of the northern energy hub, S4 Eemshaven delivers 7.75 MW / 31 MWh of grid-scale storage at one of the Netherland’s most critical power corridors. The system provides four hours of flexibility, ensuring reliability in a region that links offshore wind generation to the national grid. Built in partnership with the Province of Eemshaven and the municipality of Eemsdelta, it is equipped with 8 Tesla Megapack 2XL and the site is energised as of May 2025. Projects like S4 Eemshaven balance the region’s expanding wind and solar capacity, turning volatility into stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

The project is designed to support electricity grid stability by storing surplus energy during periods of high renewable generation (e.g. wind and solar) and releasing it when demand is high. This helps balance supply and demand and supports the energy transition in the region.

The battery is designed to operate in close coordination with grid operators and in response to system needs. It stores excess renewable energy and supplies it during peak demand, helping to reduce pressure on the grid. Importantly, it operates congestion-aware and avoids charging during periods of local grid stress. In addition, S4 Energy has an agreement with the grid operator to allow curtailment of the system for up to 15% of the time, ensuring the battery actively supports congestion management and does not contribute to it.

No. The system is designed and operated to relieve pressure on the grid, not add to it. It uses congestion-aware controls and is closely coordinated with grid operators. In addition, S4 Energy has agreements in place that allow the system to be actively curtailed when needed, ensuring it does not contribute to local congestion.

S4 Energy works closely with TenneT throughout the design, engineering, and connection phases. The project will only proceed with full technical alignment and approval from the grid operators to ensure safe and reliable integration.

The location offers proximity to key high-voltage infrastructure, making it technically suitable for a large-scale battery system. The site is located on industrial land and has been selected to minimise environmental and spatial impact while supporting grid needs.

The project has received its permit within the existing zoning framework, meaning no formal council approval process was required. S4 Energy is committed to transparency and is open to engaging with the municipality and council to provide further information on the project.

Community engagement is an important part of the project. S4 Energy is committed to transparent communication and will continue to engage with residents, local organisations, and authorities as the project progresses.

The project contributes to a more reliable and flexible electricity grid. By reducing peak loads, it helps free up grid capacity, enabling new homes and businesses to connect more quickly. This supports local economic growth and the integration of renewable energy in the region.

This project is a surface-level battery installation and does not involve underground storage, salt caverns, or mining-related activities. It avoids the geological concerns associated with earlier projects and focuses on proven, above-ground technology.

The design carefully considers visual impact, noise, and safety. The project will comply with all applicable environmental, spatial, and safety regulations, including the latest standards for battery energy storage systems.

Safety is a top priority. The system is designed in line with strict Dutch and European standards for fire safety, thermal management, and environmental protection. Continuous monitoring and advanced safety systems ensure secure operation throughout its lifetime.

No. While participation in energy markets is part of the business model, the primary role of the Muntendam battery is to support grid stability and reduce congestion. Market activities are always aligned with grid conditions and system needs.

Large-scale flexibility is essential for integrating increasing volumes of wind and solar energy. Battery systems like this enable a more reliable, resilient, and sustainable energy system, supporting both regional and national climate goals.

S4 Energy is a Dutch company specialising in the development and operation of advanced energy storage systems. Since 2010, the company has been a pioneer in storage technologies and operates across multiple European markets, with a strong track record in delivering flexible energy solutions.
