10 MW/47 MWh
S4 Energy develops, builds and operates large-scale battery storage systems that keep the grid moving. By storing renewable energy when supply is high and releasing it when demand peaks, we reduce grid congestion and ensure reliable access to clean power.
S4 Energy’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Zeeland marks a major milestone for the Dutch energy transition as the first 4-hour grid scale storage project in the country.
The S4 Heerhugowaard BESS site, was originally developed as a hybrid energy storage centre, the facility combines advanced flywheel technology with a 10 MW / 40 MWh battery system to deliver fast, reliable frequency regulation and grid-balancing services. To future proof the project in 2025 the site was transformed into a 4 hr battery system, enabling S4 HHW to move from the FCR market to aFRR (automatic frequency restoration reserve) - providing energy output for longer durations, more effective.
7.75 MW/31 MWh
Grid-scale energy storage in Groningen with a 7.75 MW connection delivering 31 MWh capacity. Strategically located in the heart of the northern energy hub, the S4 Groningen BESS delivers powerful, 4-hour flexibility.
8 MW/36 MWh/4 hr
S4 Energy Almelo site entered commercial operation as a hybrid battery-and-flywheel energy storage system in 2020. The first ever of its kind in the Netherlands, a hybrid project for the fastest kind of frequency response.
45 MW/90 MWh
Once energised, Raby Farm BESS will support the UK’s net-zero target by storing and supplying renewable electricity equivalent to 22,750 households annually.
15 MW/30 MWh
This 15 MW / 30 MWh battery system in Großgoltern (Barsinghausen, Lower Saxony) originates from Terra One’s acquired BESS portfolio and represents another step in S4 Energy’s European flexibility strategy.
This 15 MW / 30 MWh battery energy storage system in Wittmund (Lower Saxony) is S4 Energy’s first German project to reach “Ready to Build” status after acquiring Terra One’s 310 MW portfolio — a major milestone in S4’s European expansion.
99 MW/240 MWh
A well-developed 99 MW / 240 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) providing first-mover advantage in Germany’s rapidly expanding flexibility market, offering diversified revenue opportunities and strong grid impact.
500 MW/2,000 MWh
This project will be the largest BESS installation in the Netherlands once completed, providing large-scale storage capacity in the northeast energy region.
150 MW/300 MWh
A stabilising battery project at a strategic location to address grid congestion in the province of North Holland.
