S4 Energy has appointed Koen Broess as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) effective 18 February 2026. In this role, Broess will be responsible for driving S4 Energy’s further commercial growth, with a focus on market development, strategic partnerships and positioning battery energy storage as critical energy infrastructure in Europe.
Koen Broess brings more than ten years of in-depth experience in energy storage, market development and regulation. He previously served as Chief Technology Officer at Catalise Energy, where he was responsible for strategic business development and establishing commercial structures for BESS projects across multiple European countries.
Prior to that, Broess worked for more than fifteen years at DNV, where he played a key role in building and expanding the energy storage practice in continental Europe. During this period, he was involved in product development, market development, training and strengthening professional networks within the sector.
In addition to his commercial and technical background, Broess is actively engaged in policy development and sector-wide collaboration. At national level, he contributed to the Dutch Climate Agreement and to roadmaps for energy storage and electric vehicle batteries. He is a member of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management working group on battery safety and regulation (PGS 37-1) and served in 2023 as chair of the Dutch working group on non-firm grid tariffs for energy storage.
Since 2021, Broess has been a board member of Energy Storage Netherlands (ESNL). He was also a board member of Energy Storage Europe from 2020 until April 2025.
