S4 Energy announces partnership with Habitat Energy for S4 Barton

S4 Energy is partnering with Habitat Energy as S4 Barton, its second-largest BESS project after Muntendam in the Netherlands, progresses towards its next project milestone.

Habitat Energy has been selected as the optimiser for S4 Barton, bringing trading and optimisation expertise to S4 Energy’s UK battery energy storage project ahead of energisation. S4 Barton is expected to be energised later this year, with the partnership establishing the optimisation collaboration ahead of operation.

Connecting battery infrastructure with market expertise

Battery storage infrastructure and market optimisation have complementary roles. A battery provides the technical capability to store and discharge electricity. Optimisation helps determine how that capability is deployed in electricity markets, responding to changing market conditions and opportunities.

For S4 Barton, Habitat Energy will bring deep trading expertise and a sophisticated approach to optimisation. The collaboration will focus on helping the asset deliver the flexibility, performance and market value it was designed for.

As the project moves towards energisation, this partnership brings together the physical infrastructure and the market expertise needed to support its future operation.

S4 Energy’s perspective

Commenting on the partnership, S4 Energy said:

“We are delighted to be working with Habitat Energy on S4 Barton. Habitat has built a strong reputation in the UK market, combining deep trading expertise with a sophisticated approach to optimisation. As S4 Barton moves towards energisation, we look forward to working closely together to ensure the asset delivers the flexibility, performance and market value it was designed for.” – Ciarán Power, CEO, S4 Energy

Habitat Energy’s perspective

‘As S4 Energy builds one of Europe’s largest energy storage portfolios, we’re proud they have trusted Habitat Energy with their first UK asset. This partnership underscores our best-in-class trading and optimisation capabilities, which continue to deliver maximum value for asset owners and critical flexibility for the GB grid.’ - Jon Doughty, Managing Director UK, Habitat Energy

Preparing for the next stage

S4 Energy and Habitat Energy look forward to working closely together as the project advances towards commercial operation with a shared focus on translating the asset’s technical capabilities into flexibility and market value.

The S4 Barton project is a 45 MW / 90 MWh BESS project located in Barton, near Preston in Lancashire, United Kingdom. Once energised, it will support the UK’s net-zero ambitions by storing renewable electricity and delivering flexible power capacity equivalent to supplying approximately 22,750 households each year.

Currently in construction, S4 Barton will play a vital role in enhancing grid stability and reducing reliance on gas-fired peaking generation. By providing fast-responding, flexible capacity, the project will support the transition to a more resilient, low-carbon electricity system.

Energisation is set for November 2026.
