About S4 Burhafe

Located in Lower Saxony, S4 Burhafe is a 15 MW / 30 MWh grid-scale battery energy storage system adjacent to the EWE substation in the municipality of Wittmund. As one of S4 Energy’s first German projects to reach Ready-to-Build status, Burhafe represents a key milestone following the acquisition of Terra One’s German development portfolio. The project strengthens regional grid stability and supports the integration of renewable energy into one of Germany’s rapidly evolving power markets.

BESS Burhafe is ready to build, with energisation targeted for Q4 2026. The project is being developed in close coordination with the local municipality, landowner, and grid operator, EWE Netz, and reflects S4 Energy’s ambition to scale flexible storage solutions across Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

BESS Burhafe contributes to Europe’s energy transition by increasing grid flexibility and enabling the efficient integration of renewable energy. By providing 15 MW / 30 MWh of fast-responding storage capacity at a direct grid connection, the project helps stabilise the regional electricity network, reduce congestion, and manage the intermittency of wind and solar generation—key challenges in Europe’s decarbonising power system.

Burhafe is one of S4 Energy’s first German projects and the first project from the Terra One portfolio to reach Ready-to-Build status. Strategically, it marks S4 Energy’s formal entry into the German market and represents an important milestone in the company’s ambition to become a leading flexibility provider across Europe.

The project combines a direct grid connection in a rural location with grid-scale battery storage to deliver targeted regional grid stabilisation. In addition, Burhafe is expected to integrate ecological compensation measures, such as native planting and multi-year maintenance, aligning technical performance with S4 Energy’s broader sustainability standards.

Health, safety, and environmental protection protocols are fully integrated into the project’s development approach. S4 Energy is working with the municipality, landowner, and a specialised EPC contractor (to be appointed) to ensure compliance with all applicable technical, environmental, and regulatory standards throughout construction and operation.

The project is located in a rural area, minimising residential impact. Close coordination with the municipality of Wittmund and the landowner ensures compliance with environmental and legal requirements. While public participation has been limited, the project delivers local and societal value by strengthening grid reliability, supporting the regional energy transition, and contributing to the common good through improved system stability.
