Our facility in Heerhugowaard, Noord-Holland, was our second project for ancillary services.
The project consists of a hybrid system: a battery with a power of 10 MW, capacity of 9 MWh and a 3 MW KINEXT flywheel system (read more about our innovative technology). The batteries are placed in three large containers. A separate enclosure houses the six flywheels, control systems and electronics.
This hybrid system provides frequency regulation (FCR and automatic FRR) services to Tennet, the Dutch TSO. The combination with the fast-response flywheels reduces the energy throughput and number of cycles required, thereby extending lifetime of the Li-ion batteries.
Hybrid energy storage maintains grid stability, especially during times of system stress such as over-generation from renewables or excess demand.
S4 Energy owns and operates this energy storage system.
This facility has been in operation since 2021 and is supported by Participatiefonds Duurzame Economie Noord-Holland, PEDNH.
